Guide illustration: How to avoid paying the same bill twice

Automatic debit plus a manual payment and a bill paid in two apps are the most common causes. Learn how to avoid it and what to do if it happens.

In a nutshell

Paying the same bill twice happens more often than you think. The most common causes are automatic debit plus a manual payment, and the same payment slip paid by two people or in two apps. The fix is simple: one way to pay each bill, a checked receipt and the bill marked as paid right away.

How double payments happen

Forgotten automatic debit. Automatic debit means the bank takes the amount from your account on its own, on the due date. If you forget it exists and also pay the bill, the money leaves twice.

A payment slip paid in two places. In Brazil, many bills come as a "boleto", a payment slip with a barcode. You pay it in your bank's app. Your son, without knowing, pays the same boleto in his app. Or the bill arrives by email and by mail, and you pay both thinking they are different bills.

A payment that seemed to fail. The app freezes, you do not see a confirmation and you try again. Later you find out both attempts went through.

Example

Dona Lúcia has R$ 2,000 in her account (R$ is the Brazilian real). Her R$ 180 electricity bill is on automatic debit, but she forgot. When the boleto arrived by mail, she paid it in the app. The electricity was paid twice: R$ 180 × 2 = R$ 360. Her balance dropped to R$ 2,000 − R$ 360 = R$ 1,640, when it should be R$ 1,820.

The same month, her son paid the R$ 500 condo fee in his app, to help out. Dona Lúcia paid it too. Adding the two bills paid twice, R$ 180 + R$ 500 = R$ 680 went out by mistake. That money is missing at the end of the month until it is returned.

Step by step

  1. Open your bank statement and see which bills are on automatic debit. Write each one down.
  2. Choose only one way to pay each bill: automatic debit or boleto. If you want to pay manually, cancel the automatic debit with your bank.
  3. Agree at home on who pays each bill. If more than one person helps, everyone needs to know what has been paid.
  4. In Meu Gasto, add the bill under Bills to pay and, if it is paid by automatic debit, write that in the bill's name (for example, "Electricity - automatic debit"). As soon as you pay, mark it as paid. If your family is shared in the app, everyone sees the bill is already paid.
  5. Before paying, check the receipt screen: the payee's name must be the company on the bill, and the amount must match. If the app freezes, check your statement before trying again.
  6. If you paid twice, contact the company that received the money, with both receipts. Ask for a refund or a credit on the next bill. If it was a Pix sent twice, ask the person or company who received it to return it: MED, Pix's special refund mechanism, is for scams and failures, not for the payer's own mistake. If they do not solve it, file a complaint at consumidor.gov.br, Brazil's official consumer complaint website, or with Procon (the local consumer protection agency). A refund is neither automatic nor guaranteed. Meu Gasto does not reverse payments: it only helps you spot the problem.

Common mistakes

  • Paying the boleto "just in case" when automatic debit is on. Trust your statement: if the debit is scheduled, do not pay again.
  • Trying to pay again right after an error on screen. Wait a few minutes and check your statement and receipts first.
  • Leaving "mark as paid" for later. Later becomes never. Mark it in the app the moment you pay.
  • Not checking who gets the money. There is a tampered boleto scam, where the barcode is changed to send the money to someone else. Check the payee's name and the amount before confirming and, if in doubt, get a new copy from the company's official website.

Frequently asked questions

I paid a bill twice. Did I lose the money?

Not necessarily, but a refund is not automatic. Contact the company that received it, with your receipts, and ask for a refund or a credit on the next bill.

If the company charged me twice, do I get double back?

Brazil's Consumer Protection Code (art. 42) provides for a refund of double the amount wrongly charged and paid, unless the company's mistake is justifiable. If the repeat payment was your own mistake, you usually ask only for the amount back. Whether a double refund applies depends on each case; if in doubt, contact Procon.

Can Meu Gasto cancel the repeated payment?

No. The app does not connect to your bank and does not make payments or refunds. It shows what has been paid so you do not pay again.

How do I know if a bill is on automatic debit?

Check whether the amount left your account on its own in past months, or ask your bank. Then write it in the bill's name in the app.
